Rewa works at a job he doesn't enjoy: he often imagines being a bird and flying away. His worried mother sends him to a tohunga, a wise man. The tohunga grants Rewa his wish, but warns Rewa not to be a bird for too long or he might not be able to turn back into a person.
Rewa becomes a piwakawaka (fantail)but once he returns as a person, he begs the tohunga to change him into a bird again. The tohunga grants Rewa his wish many times over, over the day Rewa stays as a bird for a bit too long...
